The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is to provide boys and young men an effective educational program designed to build desirable qualities of moral strength and character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop physical, mental and emotional fitness. This has been the purpose of BSA since it was incorporated on February 8, 1910 and chartered by the Congress in 1916.
Since 1930, younger boys (currently ages 7-11, or in grades 2-5) have had the opportunity to be Cub Scouts in a year-round, home centered program that helps to strengthen the family. Cub Scouting is the largest of BSA’s divisions (the others being Boy Scouting and Venturing). While developing the boys’ character, self-reliance and esteem, the Cub Scout program also emphasizes FUN. Some activities may seem silly to adults, but to 7 to 11 year olds – they are great fun!
Cub Scouting has nine purposes. Parents, leaders and organizations work together to accomplish the following:
- Influence the development of character and encourage spiritual growth
- Develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
- Encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
- Improve understanding in the family
- Strengthen the ability to get along with other boys and to respect other people
- Foster a sense of personal achievement by developing new interests and skills
- Show how to be helpful and do one’s best
- Provide fun and exciting new things to do
- Prepare them to become Boy Scouts
